Dargo Transfer Station

The Dargo Transfer Station, operated by the Wellington Shire Council, serves as an essential waste management and resource recovery hub for the remote high-country community of Dargo. Situated on Kings Road, this local facility provides residents and visitors with a safe, designated location to responsibly drop off various types of waste. While it accepts a broad range of general refuse and recyclables—offering free disposal for standard paper, cardboard, and electronic waste (e-waste)—the station is specifically restricted by its remote scale. Unlike larger regional hubs, it does not accept green waste, timber, or concrete.

Operating under distinct constraints suited to its mountain setting, the Dargo Transfer Station is only open during select hours on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Because digital infrastructure is limited in the area, it operates strictly on a cash-only basis, with no card or EFTPOS payment facilities available on-site. Additionally, local environmental and safety regulations strictly govern its operation; the facility closes entirely on major public holidays, including Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and Good Friday, as well as on any days declared as Catastrophic or Extreme Fire Danger. In the event of active local bushfire risks, the station immediately shuts down to ensure community safety.
