The Stratford Historical Society Museum in the beautiful village of Stratford is dedicated to maintaining the local history of the former Avon Shire. They have an extensive collection of historical artefacts, photographs, reference materials and documents that cover the former Shire. The Stratford Historical Society archives cover all of the areas that were housed under the former Avon Shire, and wider into the Wonnangatta area. These include townships of Stratford, Clydebank, The Heart, Montgomery, part of Bundalaguah, Llowalong, Munro, Meerlieu, Strathfieldsaye, Dargo, Grant, Crooked River and all areas in between.
Housed in the former Stratford Methodist Church, an intact brick building of 1872 and the new shed, the Stratford Historical Society meets at 7:30 pm on the fourth Monday of the month at the Museum, Hobson Street, Stratford. The Society also meet informally and works at the Museum from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm every Tuesday.
The group also produce their historical literature, with recent publications that include local hotels, local dairy factories and the Stratford Court House. The Museum has an extensive indexing program and is a Place of Deposit for the Public Record Office.
