  • Quiet Space: Quiet Space

Tucked away in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range within the Briagolong State Forest, the Blue Pool is one of Central Gippsland’s worst-kept secrets—and for good reason. This deep, natural waterhole sits at the base of a dramatic basalt gorge along Freestone Creek, offering a stunning slice of wilderness that feels more like Australia’s Northern Territory than rural Victoria.

Located on the traditional land of the Brayakaulung people of the Gunaikurnai Nation, this idyllic spot serves as the perfect day-trip destination or weekend escape, roughly a 3-hour drive east of Melbourne and just 40 minutes north of Sale.

  • Wild Swimming & Floating: The pool is famous for its clear, fresh water. It features a pebbly shoreline that gives way to deep, calm waters.
  • The Rope Swing & Cliff Jumping: For the thrillseekers, a well-known rope swing hangs over the water, and the surrounding gorge offers cliff-jumping points ranging up to six meters. (Note: Always check the water depth and watch out for submerged rocks before jumping!)
  • Bushwalking: If you want to stretch your legs, the Peregrine Lookout Trail is a fantastic 1-hour, 6.5km loop that treats hikers to sweeping, panoramic views of the gorge and the surrounding forest canopy. Shorter walks straight up to the bluff are also available.

If you want to sleep under the stars, the Blue Pool Campground is located just 500 meters from the waterhole. Walk-in tent camping only. Vehicles must park in the designated lot. Not suitable for caravans or large trailers due to tight turning circles. (Large rigs should use the nearby Quarries Reserve instead). Spaces are100% Free (No bookings required, first-in, best-dressed).

Bring Your Own Water: There is no treated drinking water available at the campground or day-use area. Pack more than enough for drinking, cooking, and washing.

  • Beat the Crowds: Because of its immense popularity, Blue Pool gets incredibly busy during summer weekends and school holidays. To experience its true tranquility, aim for a mid-week visit or explore it during the crisp shoulder seasons of spring and autumn.
  • Leave No Trace: There are no rubbish bins provided. Pack a heavy-duty trash bag and ensure you take all your waste home with you to keep this pristine ecosystem beautiful.
  • Visit the Town: Don't miss the historic township of Briagolong itself, located just 15 minutes away. Stopping by the iconic Briagolong Hotel for a classic, hearty country pub meal is the ultimate way to wrap up a day at the pool.

Dogs are permitted in this area on lead only.
